What Adsl settings should I use and change?

Answer

What settings should I use and change?

ADSL Modem Setup
  • Switch your computer off.
  • The Adsl modem has two data cables: one thin cable for your phone line (RJ11) and either a USB or an Ethernet cable (RJ45).
  • If using USB modem, you may need to install drivers first - BEFORE switching modem on.
  • Connect the thin cable to your phone jack and the other end into the phone line port at the back of the modem.
  • Connect the USB (or Ethernet) cable to correct port on your computer, and end of the cable into the port at the back of the modem.
  • Switch modem and PC on

ADSL Modem configuration
  • Open your browser and specify http://10.0.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.254/ or http://192.168.10.200/ (or refer to manual for your particular modem)
  • Change the following values :

NB: Any other settings should be left as per default., unless you have unique requirements.

  • Save settings to Flash Memory on modem, and reboot modem.

Computer configuration
  • Change your Email accounts to specify an Outgoing SMTP server of smtp.isdsl.net
  • Change your Email accounts to specify an Incoming POP3 server of pophost.eject.co.za
  • Change your Newsgroup accounts to specify an NNTP server of news.isdsl.net

Check or change MTU Size
  • Visit http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793 and follow instructions.
  • You MUST change the correct MTU size on the modem, AND change the MTU Size on ALL your Computers / Laptops using DrTCP021.exe . On Vista the MTU size is automatically adjusted by Windows.
  • Save settings to modem, and reboot modem and all PCs

Security:
  • You must have a licensed Anti-Virus product installed and kept properly updated, or your PC will get infected.
  • Look at the award winning Escan VC or Escan ISS anti-virus / anti-spyware / anti-spam solutions.
  • You should Disable WiFi (Wireless), unless you intend using wireless connections, as hackers can connect wirelessly to your open WiFi network, and abuse your bandwidth. If you require WiFi, ensure you read your Adsl modem manual and setup the strongest Wireless security level, and after setting up the PC or Laptop(s) for Wifi - to Disable the SSID Broadcast.
  • If you (or your staff or family) use Peer2Peer programs to download software/music/videos/pornography, be aware that your network is under severe risk of getting infected, getting sued for illegal sharing of copyright material, and for excessive bandwidth being consumed

It is imperative that you change your ADSL modems 'admin' or 'root' password. Unscrupulous people can login to your modem and use your ADSL user-id and password if this is not done.
Due to the number of ADSL modems available we cannot give step by step instructions, but an example is shown for Telkom supplied ADSL modems at
http://www.telkom.co.za/attheoffice/products/dsl/business_dsl_security.html

If you opted for the Telkom Self Install option, then you MUST login to http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl and enter your ADSL Phone line number, plus your Order number - to enable the service. Should you not perform this step you can only browse the Telkom website, and no others.

Look at the ADSL non-Telkom router/modem Setup guide
